At Last! “24″ Heading to Big Screen! (We Think!)

Twentieth Century Fox’s film and TV studios are conspiring to finally bring hit television series “24″ to the bigscreen. The film side has hired scribe Billy Ray (”State of Play,” “Flightplan”) to pen the script for the feature version. Ray’s pitch, which takes Jack Bauer to Europe, was a hit with Fox execs and producers of the high-concept television series. Script is said to have come through “24″ star Kiefer Sutherland, who’s also an exec producer on the series — and is said to be eager to turn the long-running TV skein into a feature franchise. Insiders cautioned that a “24″ feature is still very much in the preliminary stages. There are a number of factors influencing how quickly it moves ahead, including the fate of the TV show.

Agency Bolsters Ranks with New Trio

The Kaplan Stahler Agency is beefing up its ranks by hiring a trio of agents: Melissa Campbell and Lisa Pollack in the alternative department and Katie Cates in scripted fare. Campbell, who began her Hollywood career at Plum Prods., segued in 2005 to the tenpercentery world by joining the Gersh Agency, where she gravitated toward reality producers and talent. Pollack most recently oversaw the development department at Motion Picture Production as VP of non-scripted programming and development. Cates started her career in daytime TV at TeleVest Prods. She spent the last three years working in the TV lit department at Gersh. The Kaplan Stahler boutique, headed by partners Mitch Kaplan and Elliot Stahler, has been in biz for nearly 30 years.

Weisz Moves in to Craig’s “Dream House”

Rachel Weisz is moving into Morgan Creek’s “Dream House.” The actress has signed on to star alongside Daniel Craig and Naomi Watts in the thriller, which Universal Pictures will distribute. Jim Sheridan is directing from a David Loucka script. Story centers on a successful publisher (Craig) who quits his Gotham job and relocates his wife (Weisz) and two daughters to a quaint New England town, only to discover that their perfect new home was the murder scene of a mother and her two children.

Heigl’s Interest Gives New Life to “Money”

Katherine Heigl is attached to star in “One for the Money” for Columbia Pictures and Lakeshore Entertainment. The film is based on the Janet Evanovich novel of the same name, which spent 75 consecutive weeks on USA Today’s bestseller list. Book, which features protagonist Stephanie Plum — an unemployed lingerie buyer who becomes a bounty hunter to make ends meet — has spawned a series of 15 novels, all with titles that have a number theme. A 16th Plum novel hits shelves this summer. Reese Witherspoon was previously attached to take on the role, but the project has been dormant for several years.

Phase 4 Finds “Bliss” with Film Buy

Toronto-based Phase 4 Films has picked up North American rights to “Finding Bliss,” starring Leelee Sobieski, Denise Richards, Jamie Kennedy and Kristen Johnston. Based loosely on writer-director Julie Davis’ experiences, the romantic comedy follows an aspiring filmmaker who ends up working as an editor on a “crossover” adult film. Pic bowed at last year’s Slamdance Film Festival.

Showrunner Appel Re-Ups with “Cleveland”

Veteran comedy writer-producer Rich Appel has inked a new three-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV, extending his 15-year relationship with the studio. Under the rich seven-figure pact, Appel, who co-created freshman Fox/20th TV animated comedy “The Cleveland Show,” will continue as executive producer/showrunner on the “Family Guy” spinoff, which has been renewed for next season. Appel first came to 20th in 1994, when he joined the studio’s animated Fox comedy “The Simpsons” as a staff writer.
